Probably the worst thing a parent could do for their child would be to buy an e-cigarette under the misconception that this might prevent them from smoking regular cigarettes, Krishnan-Sarin says. She encourages parents to talk openly and freely about vaping—with the caveat that they provide accurate information. "I think the problem is that parents lose credibility if they say something to try and convince their child, who then finds out that it isn’t true," she says. Vape pen and e-cigarette explosions from overheated, defective and/or modified device batteries have occurred, causing injury and serious health problems to users. Learn more about how to avoid vape battery explosions from the FDA or download the FDA's tips for avoiding battery explosions.
Jabba and colleagues, including co-senior author Sven Eric Jordt, Ph.D., analyzed an e-cigarette product sold under the brand name Spree Bar, which comes in at least nine flavors and is listed as containing 5 percent 6-methyl nicotine. Study results showed the actual amount of the chemical was about 88% less than labeled. The e-cigarettes also included an artificial sweetener that is up to 13,000 times sweeter than table sugar, and an artificial coolant that mimics menthol’s effects. Talk to your patients, including youth and young adults, about the dangers of tobacco use.

Learn what tobacco retailers need to do to comply with the rules designed to prevent our nation's youth from becoming the next generation of Americans to die prematurely from tobacco-related disease.
E-cigarettes aren't thought of as 100% safe, but most experts think they're less dangerous than cigarettes, says Neal Benowitz, MD, a nicotine researcher at the University of California at San Francisco. Cigarette smoking kills almost half a million people a year in the United States. Most of the harm comes from the thousands of chemicals that are burned and inhaled in the smoke, he explains. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that can look like a real cigarette or pen.
In response to this issue, the PACT Act Amendment prohibits sellers from using the U.S. Post Office to ship e-cigarettes, vapes, flavored and smokeless tobacco products. As such, it is imperative that e-cigarette cessation programs focused on adolescents are developed, evaluated, and implemented," Halpern-Felsher wrote. "This may point to the changing norms around e-cigarette use and the fact that quitting vaping among young people is becoming more normative and accepted," she said. Most of the study participants, about 87%, reported that they had tried to quit in the previous year, and about 94% reported feeling somewhat or very addicted to vaping. E-cigarettes usage by adolescents has become an epidemic according to the American Lung Association–20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years.
This data highlights a small part of a larger issue, despite the ban on e-cigarettes and vapes in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes (Production, Manufacture, Import, Export, Transport, Sale, Distribution, Storage, and Advertisement) Act, 2019. The Annual Review of Physiology article summarizes what is known—and highlights where gaps in knowledge exist—about e-cigarettes and harm to the lungs. The review discusses the range of effects found in rigorous studies, including shorter-term acute effects and longer-lasting chronic impacts. As substantiated in the review, a convincing body of evidence exists that confirms e-cigarettes cause lung inflammation and injury, as well as negative health effects in multiple organs. Crotty Alexander says e-cigarettes come with far more dangers than even she expected.
E-cigarette companies also take advantage of other marketing outlets, including the internet, retail environments, and recreational venues and events. This resource presents an overview of key aspects of e-cigarettes, including health effects, marketing practices, and regulations based on research and evidence available at the time of publication. Since the sixties, cigarette companies, starting with Philip Morris, have freebased nicotine using ammonia, which liberates the nicotine so that it can be speedily absorbed into the lungs and the brain.
However, more research is needed to fully understand emissions from e-cigarettes and their impact on human health. These aerosols can contain potentially harmful substances — including nicotine, formaldehyde and metals — some of which cause cancer and other harmful health effects. Some e-cigarette brands and other nicotine products state they contain synthetic nicotine rather than nicotine made from or derived from tobacco.

Cases of accidental eye exposure have also been reported as refill bottles are similar to commercially available eye dropper bottles used for therapeutic eye drops. Prohibiting e-cigarette use inside or near buildings, vehicles and other enclosed spaces is the only way to eliminate exposure to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol and health risks that may come with it. Other electronic vapor products that use e-liquids include e-cigars, e-pipes, and hookah pens (e-hookah).
Although e-liquids do not contain tobacco, they contain chemicals, usually including flavorings, and often contain nicotine, which is addictive. Aerosol from e-cigarettes can also include cancer-causing chemicals, and diacetyl, a chemical used in some e-cigarette flavorings, has been linked with serious lung disease. Some people (most commonly youths or young adults) have experienced seizures while using e-cigarettes.
At that point, levels of formaldehyde exceeded limits set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), though other compounds didn’t come close. About a quarter of middle and high school students surveyed in 2017 said they had been around someone vaping at least once in the past 30 days. Teens and young adults can text DITCHVAPE to to receive free quit vaping support from the program. This study is the first published randomized clinical trial of a quit vaping program among teens, filling an important gap in the scientific literature and providing much needed evidence for pediatricians, school administrators, and public health agencies. Although stopping smoking can cause short-term side effects such as reversible weight gain, smoking cessation services and activities are cost-effective because of the positive health benefits. Further, educational aspirations and school engagement are tied to student composition and school-based networks and norms, which have had different associations with smoking between schools [28].
When studying tobacco cigarettes, researchers rely on smoking machines that simulate how frequently a typical smoker takes a puff and how much smoke is inhaled with each breath. No one has yet determined how much e-cig vapor the typical user breathes in, so different studies assume different amounts of vapor as their standard, making it difficult to compare their results. Tracing what happens to that vapor once it is inhaled is equally problematic.
In 2021 "other" flavored devices made up 71 percent of all disposable devices sold or given away, with the most-popular subcategories being fruit-flavored and fruit & menthol/mint flavored products. These two subcategories alone made up more than half of all disposable e-cigarette devices sold or given away in 2021. Researchers said that the study’s prospective observational design allows them to infer, but not conclusively determine, a causal relationship between e-cigarette use and heart failure. However, with its large sample size and detailed data on substance use and health information, Bene-Alhasan said the study is one of the most comprehensive studies to assess this relationship to date. This guide is intended to provide general information about the California Electronic Cigarette Excise Tax and registration, collection, filing, and payment responsibilities of retailers of electronic cigarettes containing or sold with nicotine. Like the BC5000 profiled above, the ELFBAR 600 is free of diacetyl and vitamin E acetate and has a solidly sealed liquid compartment. The airflow allows for a nice mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw in which you hold each puff in your mouth for a bit before inhaling. This could be a little easier on your lungs, since the vapor can cool down before you breathe it in.
This includes data on youth use of these products, which has led to development of several educational programs designed to prevent adolescents and teens from using these products. Through tobacco product problem reports and tobacco product violation reports, the FDA also knows much more about many safety and health hazards they may pose. The Surgeon General reports e-cigarette use among youth is a significant public health concern and steps must be taken by parents, educators and especially policymakers to discourage use of e-cigarettes.
While there appears to be some consensus that vaping may be less harmful to health than tobacco cigarette smoking, the dangers of e-cigarettes remain unclear. The range of e-liquid flavours available to consumers is extensive and is used to attract both current smokers and new e-cigarette users, which is a growing public health concern [6]. In fact, over 5 million middle- and high-school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2019 [75], and appealing flavours have been identified as the primary reason for e-cigarette consumption in 81% of young users [76]. Since 2016, the FDA regulates the flavours used in the e-cigarette market and has recently published an enforcement policy on unauthorised flavours, including fruit and mint flavours, which are more appealing to young users [77].
JUULs very closely resemble a USB drive, can be charged in a usb rechargeable electronic cigarette lighter port, and emit little to no detectable vapor or odor. See the FAA regulations for examples of effective measures. Each lithium ion battery must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh; or for lithium metal batteries, a lithium content of 2 grams.
A 2016 report indicated that many vape fluids contain flavoring agents at concentrations that may pose risks to users. It carries the same health risks as vaping with any other e-cigarette brand. There’s limited evidence to date of the long-term effects of vaping because we know the lung effects of vaping will take decades to develop.
Without immediate measures to stop epidemic use of these products, the long-term adverse health effects will increase. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults.
The researchers said that the findings suggest that if tobacco cigarette smokers who use e-cigarettes for a healthier alternative to tobacco won’t benefit by the switch. Cannabis and CBD e-liquids usually contain other chemicals, such as base liquids or flavoring agents. They may cause side effects similar to those of nicotine-free e-cigarettes. Young people who vape nicotine are more likely to start smoking cigarettes in the future. The 2018 NAP report concluded there’s some evidence that nicotine and nicotine-free e-cigarettes can damage oral cells and tissues in people who don’t smoke cigarettes.

Cessation strategies should be based on the best available evidence of efficacy, to go with other tobacco control measures and subject to monitoring and evaluation. Based on the current evidence, it is not recommended that governments permit sale of e-cigarettes as consumer products in pursuit of a cessation objective. While they may help some people stop smoking, vaping products do not have FDA approval as a tool for quitting. E-cigarettes may even keep people from trying proven methods of quitting smoking.
This data brief demonstrates that teens whose environments put them at risk for use of e-cigarettes are more likely to try them. The study, published on May 23, 2022, in Tobacco Control, is the first to look at the health care costs of e-cigarette use among adults 18 and older. The second most supported measure, strengthening restrictions on the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes, was supported by 82% of people. In 2019, only 67% of people in Australia supported strengthening these restrictions. The proportion of people neither smoking regular cigarettes nor using e‑cigarettes has remained stable (Figure 3).
For detailed, up to date information at country level, see the searchable database on the Tobacco Control Laws website, published by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK). In April 2020, FDA extended from May to September 2020 the deadline for manufacturers to apply for premarket authorization, a process that includes the scientific evaluation of risks and benefits of e-cigarettes for the U.S. population. NCI supports research to understand the potential impact of ENDS use on both individual and population health, as it relates to cancer control and prevention.
Upon entering the blood, nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. First PuffsThe current iteration of e-cigarettes was invented and popularized by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and entered the U.S. market some seven years ago. They usually contain nicotine, which is the addictive chemical in cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, which is the harmful part of cigarettes that causes cancer. By comparison, traditional cigarette sales have fallen by 5.2% since July 2023, while smokeless and oral nicotine products — led foremost by Zyn products — are up 11.8% as a category. Amid the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes and vapes among young people, health experts from PGIMER have raised concerns. They pointed out that many young people mistakenly think that e-cigarettes are "cool" because of their flavours, sleek designs, and social appeal. Experts warn that this misconception greatly increases the chances of non-smoking youth using regular cigarettes.
Other important components in the aerosols include silicate particles from the fiberglass wicks or silicone [89,90,91]. Many of these products are known to cause abnormalities in respiratory function and respiratory diseases [89,90,91], but more in-depth studies are required. Interestingly, the battery output voltage also seems to have an impact on the cytotoxicity of the aerosol vapours, with e-liquids from a higher battery output voltage showing more toxicity to A549 cells [30]. The lethal dose of nicotine for an adult is estimated at 30–60 mg [52].
In contrast, other studies found acute microvascular endothelial dysfunction, increased oxidative stress and arterial stiffness in smokers after exposure to e-cigarettes with nicotine, but not after e-cigarettes without nicotine (reviewed in [20]). In women smokers, a study found a significant difference in stiffness after smoking just one tobacco cigarette, but not after use of e-cigarettes (reviewed in [20]). However, research updates on, and analysis of, the potential health benefits/risks of e-cigarettes are outside the scope of TobaccoTactics. These devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as pictured below, with several different names. Of note, the abstinence rate found in the nicotine-replacement group was lower than what is usually expected with this therapy. Nevertheless, the incidence of throat and mouth irritation was higher in the e-cigarette group than in the nicotine-replacement group (65.3% vs. 51.2%, respectively). Also, the participant adherence to the treatment after 1-year abstinence was significantly higher in the e-cigarette group (80%) than in nicotine-replacement products group (9%) [100]. These data overall indicate that the harmful effects of nicotine should not be underestimated. Despite the established regulations, some inaccuracies in nicotine content labelling remain in different brands of e-liquids.
Middle and high school students are the largest users of these smoking replacements. Recent youth tobacco surveys found e-cigarette use had surpassed conventional cigarettes as the most commonly used tobacco product among youth. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, including "vapes," "e-cigs," "puff bars," and "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)." E-cigarettes are devices which produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine—the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products—flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air. The nicotine in e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes is highly addictive. While these devices may help some people quit smoking, there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes can pose serious health risks, especially to people who do not smoke traditional cigarettes.

Interestingly, most of these reports linking COVID-19 harmful effects with smoking or vaping, are based on their capability of increasing the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the lung. It is well known that ACE2 is the gate for SARS-CoV-2 entrance to the airways [106] and it is mainly expressed in type 2 alveolar epithelial cells and alveolar macrophages [107]. To date, most of the studies in this field indicate that current smokers have higher expression of ACE2 in the airways (reviewed by [108]) than healthy non-smokers [109, 110].
