The e-cigarette device (Vype ePod1.0, Nicoventures Trading Ltd., Blackburn, UK) consists of a metallic outer device case, a printed circuit board to control the device, a lithium-ion rechargeable battery (350 mAh) and an e-cigarette cartridge (Fig. 1). The voltage ranges from 2.2 to 3.1 V and is not adjustable by the user. The device has dimensions (h × w × d) of 104.2 × 19.1 × 10.5 mm and a power output of 6.5 ± 0.5 W. The cartridges or pods consist of a plastic case holding the ceramic wick material and a flat metal heating element (NiCr, 0.8 –1.4-Ω resistance). Each pod is pre-filled with Vype e-liquid (1.9 mL) and is magnetically attached to the device.
Susceptibility to smoking or non-combustible nicotine use is also influenced by national tobacco control policies. In Europe, Finland has been among the countries with most advanced tobacco control regulations [31]. Still, there is a large difference in smoking and snus use between students in academically and non-academically oriented education [7]. For snus, Finland follows the EU-wide sales ban but cross-border traveller imports from Sweden are permitted and an illicit market exists [32]. For e-cigarettes, comprehensive regulations were introduced in 2016 including retail sale licensing and ban for distance sales, display and advertising at point-of-sale, other flavours than tobacco and use of e-cigarettes in smoke-free places [33].
Vaping is the term often used to describe the act of using an electronic cigarette. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid solution — usually, but not always, containing nicotine — turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. If the base nicotine mixture is not palatable, many flavors, such as mint, apple and others, can make vaping attractive, especially to adolescents. "We also did not see evidence that teens who quit vaping transitioned to smoking," added Graham. The text message intervention tested in this study is called This is Quitting, now part of the EX Program from Truth Initiative.
This ban excludes disposable e-cigarette devices, which are sold in many appealing flavors and are relatively inexpensive. And are now the most popular type of e-cigarette used by adolescents. Nicotine is highly addictive and may lead to nicotine cravings and development of tolerance (the need to use more often in order to have the same effect). Nicotine addiction can negatively affect relationships and impair performance at school, at work, or in other activities. Researchers have also identified vitamin E acetate, a chemical added to some THC-containing vaping products, as the main—but possibly not the only—cause of the illness.
Over the years, Evans tried to quit by using the nicotine patch, gum, and even hypnosis. When you stop using it, you can go into withdrawal and feel depressed and crabby. Electronic nicotine and vapor delivery systems, which include e-cigarettes, vaping pens, e-hookah and similar devices, typically contain nicotine. Some ingredients found in e-cigarettes are considered toxic and there is no regulation of what chemicals e-cigarettes contain or how much nicotine the user is inhaling. These factors could lead to long-term adverse health effects for e-cigarette users and bystanders. This new law will reduce exposure to the potentially dangerous chemicals for e-cigarette users and those around them. Prior to electronic cigarettes being added to the Clean Indoor Air Act, only the smoking of substances containing tobacco, including cigars, cigarettes or pipes, were restricted in public places. While many counties have already banned the use of e-cigarettes in public places, including restaurants, bars and other work places, this bill makes the law consistent across New York State.
Collectively, these devices are known as electronic nicotine delivery systems. E-cigarette use is often referred to as "vaping" and the aerosol created from their use referred to as "vapor." E-cigarettes come in many colors, shapes, and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, highlighters, or toys. The liquid in e-cigarettes is sometimes called e-juice, e-liquid, vape juice, or vape liquid.

Many providers ask their patients about alcohol, drug use and smoking, yet forget to ask about vaping. Project for Teens is an example of a local outreach program that provides support and education on the dangers of vaping.
Juul’s C.E.O., Kevin Burns, who is fifty-four, has a friendly dad-who-loves-his-vacation-house demeanor. Burns described Juul to me as a "cigarette-killing company." Before he accepted the job, he said, he convened an informal focus group in his kitchen with his son, who’s in high school, and a few of his son’s friends. He asked them why they had these things, when they got them, how prevalent they were. "We have frustrations about how the product is glorified on social media," he told me. I admitted to Winickoff that I was probably endangering my lungs as a weed smoker. He gamely pointed out that I could look into ingested forms of marijuana, and noted that my brain was in a much more stable place than it had been when I was twenty-one.
The agency says companies were blocked because they couldn’t show the possible benefits for adult smokers outweighed the risk of underage use. The companies say they had prepared detailed plans to avoid appealing to young people. Consequently, stricter regulation and a higher quality control in the e-liquid industry are required. The mislabelling of nicotine content in e-liquids has been previously addressed [8, 34]. Of note, several studies have detected nicotine in those e-liquids labelled as nicotine-free [5, 35, 36]. Among the 17 samples tested in this latter study 14 were identified to be counterfeit or suspected counterfeit. A third study detected nicotine in 7 of 10 nicotine-free refills, although the concentrations were lower than those identified in the previous analyses (0.1–15 µg/mL) [5].
Several states have imposed restrictions on the sale of e-cigarettes. There are also restrictions on liquids with flavors that may be more attractive to younger people. The researchers also noted a lack of evidence that vaping is an effective means of quitting smoking. The marketing of e-cigarettes and their range of flavors can give the impression that vaping is not harmful.

As such, it is imperative that e-cigarette cessation programs focused on adolescents are developed, evaluated, and implemented," Halpern-Felsher wrote. "This may point to the changing norms around e-cigarette use and the fact that quitting vaping among young people is becoming more normative and accepted," she said. Most of the study participants, about 87%, reported that they had tried to quit in the previous year, and about 94% reported feeling somewhat or very addicted to vaping. E-cigarettes usage by adolescents has become an epidemic according to the American Lung Association–20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years.

People who smoke cigarettes have a 30% to 40% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes and its complications. Smoking can increase the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (skin cancer) on the lips.
Some public health experts believe that e-cigarettes are an essential alternative to smoking tobacco that can help smokers quit. Others argue that e-cigarettes could be a route into nicotine addiction and point out that their long-term safety has not yet been proven. There are also those that believe that e-cigarettes may offer public health benefits but that e-cigarettes should be regulated, particularly when it comes to the marketing of such products.

See the FAA regulations for examples of effective measures. Each lithium ion battery must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh; or for lithium metal batteries, a lithium content of 2 grams.
Taken together, the studies provide strong evidence that an interactive, tailored text message program can help teens and their older peers break free from nicotine addiction. These findings are especially important given the recent youth mental health crisis documented by the U.S. Adolescents in this study were characterized by high severity of past-year problems with depression, sleep, anxiety, trauma, and substance use. In addition, moderate to high levels of nicotine dependence were observed across multiple measures, with more than three-quarters (76.2%) of teens vaping within 30 minutes of waking — a common way to measure addiction. E-cigarettes have been allowed to stay on the market for years without undergoing a full review of their public health impact, sparking a sustained and ongoing crisis of youth use. As of November 2023, the FDA has not completed reviewing all applications from e-cigarette makers to market their products, leaving many e-cigarettes on the market while waiting for a decision. To date, the FDA has denied permission to market flavored and menthol e-cigarette products such as Vuse Solo, Vuse Vibe, Vuse Ciro, and Vuse Alto. The FDA has denied permission to market many non-tobacco and non-menthol flavored e-cigarette products, however, many of those denials are currently under judicial or supervisory review. In recent years, the FDA has increased enforcement efforts around e-cigarette manufacturers and retailers for continuing to sell youth-appealing e-cigarettes. These actions include issuing warning letters, fines, injunctions, and joint operations with other federal officials to seize imports of unauthorized e-cigarette products.

This is called secondhand vaping, and there isn't a lot of published research yet on how inhaling this aerosol affects the body, especially among adolescents. If you spend time around someone who vapes, you might be wondering if you can get secondhand smoke from a vape. While there's still a lot we don’t know about the harms of secondhand vaping, research suggests that bystanders who breathe in the aerosol might be exposed to many of the same toxins found in e-cigarettes and even some found in traditional tobacco. Research from The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 reveals thousands of chemical ingredients in vape products, most of which are not yet identified. Among those the team could identify were several potentially harmful substances, including caffeine, three chemicals never previously found in e-cigarettes, a pesticide and two flavorings linked with possible toxic effects and respiratory irritation. "These cases appear to predominantly affect people who modify their vaping devices or use black market modified e-liquids. This is especially true for vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha. The comprehensive review of the evidence finds that almost all of the 2.6 million adults using e-cigarettes in Great Britain are current or ex-smokers, most of whom are using the devices to help them quit smoking or to prevent them going back to cigarettes. It also provides reassurance that very few adults and young people who have never smoked are becoming regular e-cigarette users (less than 1% in each group).
The prognosis depends on how much nicotine was taken and how quickly treatment was started. If a person is able to survive during the first four hours after poisoning, they’re usually likely to recover. If a person has been severely affected, they may have ongoing seizures or respiratory failure or other problems because of the damage done from low oxygen levels during the nicotine overdose event. Increased levels of nicotine or cotinine (nicotine metabolite) can be detected in urine or blood. Nicotine poisoning or overdose can also result from taking more than the recommended amount of nicotine replacement products (for example, chewing too much gum or dissolving lozenges) or taking too high of a dose of patches, inhalers or nasal sprays.

The novel results for school-level factors indicate that prevention of nicotine use may be supported by facilitating nicotine-free schools through policies and programmes. This may address especially the peer selection processes, which have been observed both in school disengagement and smoking initiation [28, 29]. Further, it may influence the students’ descriptive and injunctive norms, which both predict smoking initiation among youth [27].
Prior to that, it was the Wild West, where a variety of companies started making and selling products with their own personal spin. This is true for nicotine, but in the case of propylene glycol, no one has established what the relevant by-product is or how to best detect it. Boston, MA – Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarette side effects electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake. In conclusion, the prevalence of susceptibility among adolescents differs by product type. Liking school and academically oriented educational aspirations appear as consistent protective factors, while the use of other tobacco or nicotine products and positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group appear as risk factors.
During the Vietnam War, cigarettes were included with C-ration meals. In 1975, the U.S. government stopped putting cigarettes in military rations. Many e-cigarettes sold in the U.S. contain far more nicotine than e-cigarettes sold elsewhere, which increases the risk of addiction and harm to the developing brains of youth and young adults. Marketing tactics targeting young people have contributed to the rapid increase in use. The long-term risks of exclusive use of e-cigarettes are not fully known but evidence is accumulating that e-cigarette use has negative effects on the cardiovascular system and lungs.
The association between student- and school-level factors and susceptibility to smoking. Nationally, e-cigarette use among high school students doubled from 11.7% in 2017 to 27.5% in 2019. The researchers studied human endothelial cells generated in the laboratory from what are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells. IPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be difficult to isolate directly from a patient. A.C.—managed the analytical testing programme and co-authored the manuscript.

Months after the release of that advisory, Yale researchers found that byproducts, called acetals, form when flavoring agents mix with solvents in the liquid. It is not yet known if this has negative effects on the body, but Sven-Eric Jordt, PhD, one of the study’s authors, says he hopes that the FDA will begin to study the short- and long-term effects of inhaled acetals. Under the PACT Act, delivery sales of electronic nicotine delivery systems must also comply with state, local or tribal laws involving excise taxes on these devices.

The range of e-liquid flavours available to consumers is extensive and is used to attract both current smokers and new e-cigarette users, which is a growing public health concern [6]. In fact, over 5 million middle- and high-school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2019 [75], and appealing flavours have been identified as the primary reason for e-cigarette consumption in 81% of young users [76]. Since 2016, the FDA regulates the flavours used in the e-cigarette market and has recently published an enforcement policy on unauthorised flavours, including fruit and mint flavours, which are more appealing to young users [77].
From early 2024, stronger controls on the importation, manufacture, advertising, supply and commercial possession of all e‑cigarette devices and components (with and without nicotine) are being implemented by the Australian Government. These regulatory changes are being implemented by the Federal Government in stages during 2024 in partnership with State and Territory Governments (TGA 2023). Researchers said that the results show e-cigarettes may confer as much as or potentially even more harm to users and especially patients at risk for vascular disease. Results showed that total cholesterol and LDL or "bad" cholesterol was higher in sole e-cigarette users compared to nonsmokers.

In general, most of the cytokines detected in BALF were significantly increased in WT mice exposed to PG with nicotine compared to PG alone or air control [42]. Some of these effects were found to be through nicotine activation of NF-κB signalling albeit in females but not in males. In addition, PG with nicotine caused increased macrophage and CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocytes cell counts in BALF compared to air control, but these effects were ameliorated when animals were sub-chronically exposed to PG alone [42]. Researchers know more about the long-term effects of smoking than those of vaping. However, vaping products contain a great deal fewer harmful chemicals than cigarettes and can be an effective tool in quitting smoking altogether.
In this particular aspect, again the composition of the e-liquid varies significantly among different commercial brands [4, 35]. The most common and major components of e-liquids are PG or 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol or glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol). Both types of compounds are used as humectants to prevent the e-liquid from drying out [2, 53] and are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as "Generally Recognised as Safe" [54].

The authors of a 2019 review point out that e-liquid aerosols contain particulates, oxidizing agents, aldehydes, and nicotine. When inhaled, these aerosols most likely affect the heart and circulatory system. Of note, another study indicated that although RANTES/CCL5 and CCR1 mRNA were upregulated in flavour/nicotine-containing e-cigarette users, vaping flavour and nicotine-less e-cigarettes did not significantly dysregulate cytokine and inflammasome activation [43].

Probably the worst thing a parent could do for their child would be to buy an e-cigarette under the misconception that this might prevent them from smoking regular cigarettes, Krishnan-Sarin says. She encourages parents to talk openly and freely about vaping—with the caveat that they provide accurate information. "I think the problem is that parents lose credibility if they say something to try and convince their child, who then finds out that it isn’t true," she says. The high standard deviation for glyoxal and methylglyoxal observed in BB18 e-cigarette emissions is probably related to an analytical sample matrix effect and/or batch variability83,96,97. Despite the high standard deviation, the percentage reduction of glyoxal and methylglyoxal in both e-cigarette emissions relative to cigarette smoke was ≥ 97.0% and ≥ 94.5%, respectively (Table 3).
